DIY Costume Magic: What makes it work?

No shock here: we love a good DIY project, and Halloween costumes are right up our alley! And as a gang of artists, we'd be the first to say that the best DIY costumes aren’t about perfection—but rather encompass creativity, comfort, and clever use of what you already have on hand. A good homemade costume should feel fun to wear, easy to move in, and have that little spark of originality that makes people smile while saying, "Wait --- you made that?!

Tips & Tricks

"Shop" your closet first! Sometimes that scarf in the back of the closet can double as the perfect belt. An oversized blanket? Instant cape. Need a color scheme? Just grab all those blue(ish) articles of clothing and roll with it!

Don’t overlook the accessories! They’re often what makes a DIY costume feel complete. A hat, some creative jewelry, or even something unexpected like a kitchen utensil can be the prop that ties your whole look together.

Dig into the craft supplies that we all have way too much of (said no artsy person EVER!). The glue that pulls it all together might just be... well... glue! It really might be the magic that holds your costume together—literally! And cardboard, pipe cleaners, or puff balls can all be transformed into details that create one bold statement piece. Hot glue is a DIY lifesaver (with a reminder: it’s HOT). Once everything’s attached, grab your paintbrushes and add the finishing touches. The saturation of acrylic paint will give that pop of color you might want, but even kid-friendly tempera paint works in a pinch!
