What is in a MUSE?

"MUSE" is defined as a person or a personified force that is the source of inspiration for a creative artist. Finding creativity isn't hard - it surrounds us every day! But narrowing your focus toward what inspires YOU can be a little more precise. Maybe you want to learn to draw realistically. Perhaps you're curious about the "how" of those art tools collecting dust in your studio space. And maybe, just maybe your MUSE whispers to you in colors, textures, or patterns, nudging you to experiment. Our private lessons offer exactly this, and it might just be the reason our private lesson students keep coming back for more!

What Can YOU Create?

Structured as predominantly 1-on-1, in one hour durations, each lesson allows students to explore, build, and master tools and skills while being guided throughout the process. Trusting your instructor and the process is key. Our education philosophy is to strive for progress over perfection, as creativity should always be about learning. Most students approach each lesson with a goal in mind, but sometimes that evolves into exciting and unexpected journeys that we, as instructors, are thrilled to join them on.

The Proof is in the Progress

One of our adult students, EB, exemplifies this kind of growth in her artistic explorations. EB came to MUSEjar almost four years ago wondering if we could give her a "quick tutorial" on how to use some drawing materials that she discovered in her basement. Starting with the basics, her instructor, Lisa, worked her through the nuances and uses of the medium, and now, years after beginning her journey, EB is producing work that is far beyond introductory level, in completely new media, challenging her confidence and inspiration in every weekly lesson.

Of course we do have students who come to us already inspired and motivated, sometimes with a strong foundation in art skills. One of Jenny's students, AG, is a teen who enjoys experimenting with different mediums, often discovering unique results she didn’t expect—a quality Jenny loves to encourage in her students. Many of our students, like AG, get so much out of the freedom we can allow for within our educational programming structure like private lessons. Evident in examples of her work seen here, as AG’s journey unfolds, she is learning to embrace risk with less fear, discovering just how transformative the rewards can be.

            .

Whether you're like EB, finding her MUSE in the amazingly inspirational photographic reference images she gravitates to, or like AG who often exudes confidence and willingness to adapt as needed with her craft, the journey is where the growth happens. But it all starts with an inspiration, usually found within oneself.

Your MUSE is personal, unique, and a live, evolving creature — and discovering it is the first step to making art that feels authentically yours.
