Krista Mezzadri is an artist working primarily with watercolor and oil pastel. Her focus is to blend improvisational expressionism with reductive abstraction. She has recently had work published in the Canadian print publication Makers Movement Magazine. Krista and her family have been settled in the Buffalo area for the past 4 years. She is self-taught and invites you to follow along as she shares her process on Instagram @kristamezzadri.
With my current work, I’m inspired by the idea of one’s personal, inner landscape, the ethereal space between abstraction and representation. When I sit down to paint, however, I don’t have a particular landscape in mind. Using color as the language, I let the image unfold vertically through the application of horizontal line. With my watercolors, this is my literal technique; I brush varying intensities of pigment intermittently with stripes of water. For oil pastel sticks, I apply the layers with thick improvisational strokes, and use a palette knife to scrape, spread, or build the pastels, sometimes imagining them as potter’s clay. Either way, the composition holistically presents a vista. Between opacity and transparency, exactness and fluidity, I gravitate to using these two mediums because together they offer a comprehensive way for me to convey my internal message. I make my art because the process brings me peace. The immediacy of both oil pastel and watercolor allows me to paint intuitively, almost meditatively, in which I can express my transitory emotion from that exact moment. I’m motivated by a passage in the Tao Te Ching which states, “Do your work, then step back; the only path to serenity.”
In the spirt of inspiring people and supporting local artists, we love to feature the work of artists in our community. During the winter months when we are forced to close the garage door of our open air shop, we make lemonade out of lemons by installing a gallery wall!
