REGISTRATION FOR THIS CLASS IS CLOSED.
This series will help those who want to begin plein air painting get started and learn the basics of painting landscapes. This series builds upon itself. Participants should choose to come from the beginning, and may take one to four classes.
Class 1 - April 23rd: Brush techniques will be introduced while exploring the subject matter of skies and cloud formations. Different daylight options will be discussed, including, sunrise and sunset, as well as, atmospheric stormy days. Class will begin with an instructor demonstration while participants follow the instructor's painting. Value gradations to create depth will be highlighted. After the demonstration, participants will paint independently from their personal photos of skies/clouds with the instructor's one on one guidance. Participants should bring several personal photos of clouds and skies for reference to paint from. Participants should practice at home.
Class 2 - April 30th: Wash techniques will be introduced while drawing inspiration from skies, clouds and mountains or hills. After the instructors short demo, which the participants will follow along with, students will paint from their personal photos. Focal point and value will be discussed.
Participants should bring several personal photos of clouds and skies with mountains and/or hills for reference to paint from. One on one guidance will be provided by the instructor. Participants should practice at home.
Class 3 - May 7th: Wet into wet wash techniques will be explored, while painting a landscape of a closeup of rocks with some foliage and sky, or trees and sky. Participants will reserve the white of the watercolor paper to create focal points, while beginning to learn how to paint the soft forms of trees and their foliage which overlap the sky or background. Wet into wet techniques will be encouraged wherever advantageous, as well as, other wash techniques. Participants should bring several simple photos of rocks and sky with some foliage, or sky and trees with foliage. Participants should practice at home.
Class 4 - May 21st: Landscape of each individual's choice. Participants will begin class by doing a value study of their reference to create a plan for reserving the white of the paper and a focal point, as well as, color ideas. Participants should bring several simple photos of rocks, sky, and trees with foliage. The addition of water and/or a simple reflection is also an option. Instructor will provide one on one guidance throughout the class. Participants should practice at home.
